Tourism, outings and leisure activities in La Manche
Tourlaville and Cherbourg are situated at the top of the northern coast of the Normandy peninsula, which forms La Manche.
Road access on the N13 or the A84 make it easy to reach different tourist sites, such as the Bayeux Tapestry, the Mont Saint-Michel or the Normandy Landings beaches.
Other trips can be made by ferry to the Channel Islands; Jersey and the Chausey isles,or the Island of Tatihou.
There are many, often famous churches, mansions and châteaux ( the 16th Century Château des Ravalet is just 10 minutes walk from the house!) as well as museums to discover too.
Just like the famous Botanical Gardens, which should not be missed either.
Museums and National Heritage sites in La Manche
“Wonder of the Western World”, the Mont Saint-Michel rises from the heart of an immense bay, flooded by the highest tides in Europe.
Listed as “Memory of the World” by UNESCO, the Bayeux Tapestry is a unique tapestry 70 metres long, manufactured in the 11th Century.
The Landing Beaches
The Fort du Roule museum in Cherbourg/ Airborne Museum in Sainte Mère L’Eglise/ Utah-Beach: Landing Museum/ Omaha Beach: Memorial Museum/ Pointe du Hoc/ American cemetry in Colleville/ Arromanches: 360° Museum.
Cité de la Mer: unique museum complex dedicated to the deep ocean and its conquest.
Ludiver: Planetarium and Observatory at the Cap de la Hague
Omonville la Petite: The house of Jacques Prévert in the Hague, where the poet lived until 1977
Château des Ravalet in Tourlaville: Renaissance abode with its splendid and exotic floral park, 10 mins walk from the house.
Gatteville Lighthouse: Built between 1829 and 1834, Gatteville Lighthouse is the second tallest lighthouse in France at 75 metres high.
Montfarville Church: Built in 1763, it contains exceptional artistic treasures.
Hotel de Beaumont in Valognes: The most prestigious mansion in the “Normandy Versailles”
Saint Martin Animal Park in Montaigu la Brisette: you can wander through a wooded area of 15 hectares, discovering animals from Asia, Africa and see the charming valley of 4 pools.
Regional Cider and Calvados Museum in Valognes.
Château de Pirou: built in the 12th Century on an artificial isle surrounded by moats and high ramparts, it is the oldest Normandy Château.
Crosville-sur-Douve: 16th- 17th Centuries, a listed Historic Monument , one of the most imposing in La Manche.
The Islands
The Channel Islands Jersey, Guernesey, Sark, Herm.
Ferries to Great Britain and the Channel Islands from Cherbourg and Carteret.
The Island of Tatihou, off the coast of the small harbour town, Saint Vaast la Hougue, close by Barfleur, is a place reserved for sea-birds, and lovers of history, nature and the environment.
Jersey, Guernesey,Sark, Herm and Aurigny are a world apart and give a complete change of scenery.
